Which RHS qualification is right for you?

A guide to RHS Level 1, 2 and 3 — and where each one leads in your career.

The RHS offers the most widely recognised qualifications in UK horticulture.

Level 1 — An accessible introduction, good for career-changers with no formal experience. Covers basic plant science and practical skills.

Level 2 — The industry standard entry qualification. Most employers expect at least Level 2 for gardener roles. Available as theory, practical, or both.

Level 3 — For senior and head-gardener track roles. Deeper plant science, design principles and management content. A stepping stone to the Master Horticulturist pathway.

Which to choose? Start at Level 2 unless you're brand new to horticulture — Level 1 rarely accelerates a career that practical experience won't. Pair theory with the practical certificate for the strongest CV.
