Gardening jobs in the UK
Paid gardening roles in private gardens, country estates and maintenance teams — plus the routes from first job to head gardener.
Gardening work is the day-to-day care of planted spaces: borders and beds, lawns, hedges, roses, kitchen gardens and the seasonal jobs that keep them looking their best. Most paid roles sit in private gardens, estates and grounds teams, where you work to a plan set by the owner, head gardener or garden designer rather than deciding everything yourself.
The work is physical and weather-dependent, and it rewards people who notice detail. A maintenance gardener is expected to prune correctly by species, recognise pests and disease early, and work tidily and safely around clients. In larger gardens the role is more specialised — a rose garden, a productive kitchen garden or a glasshouse range may belong to one person.
