Most outdoor roles come in two shapes: permanent PAYE employment, or self-employed/contract work.

PAYE

  • Holiday pay, sick pay and a pension.
  • Stable hours and one site.
  • Less control over which jobs you take.

Contract / self-employed

  • Higher hourly rate, paid per job.
  • You handle your own tax, insurance and equipment.
  • Freedom to choose clients and seasons.

Hybrid Many experienced gardeners run a small PAYE role alongside a private-client round. The steady income funds the quieter winter months.

Whichever you choose, make sure you have public-liability insurance if you're trading on your own account — it's cheaper than you think and essential.
