The green industries have clearer progression than many newcomers expect.

A typical path

  1. Trainee / apprentice — on-the-job training alongside a college day-release qualification.
  2. Gardener — running your own areas of a site under supervision.
  3. Senior gardener — leading a small team and a budget.
  4. Head gardener — responsible for an entire garden or estate.
  5. Garden manager / curator — strategy, staffing and capital projects.

What opens doors

  • RHS Level 2 gets you taken seriously; Level 3 opens senior roles.
  • A chainsaw or pesticide ticket widens the work you can take on.
  • Two solid seasons at one respected garden beats a long CV of short stints.

Progression is steady, not instant — but the ladder is real.
